Business Description
A garden ceremony with a flowery arch and rose-strewn path is lovely, but
you march to a different drummer. Your tastes run toward the hip, the
urban, the edgy. You want a venue that suits your sensibilities.
At the juncture of Beverly Hills and Hollywood is the Sofitel Los Angeles,
a French chic-meets-Hollywood glamour hotel fresh off a spectacular $70
million renovation. You know you’ve found the right place as you pull your
car alongside towering glass panels in the porte-cochère, and a valet in a
black beret (Sofitel, remember, is based in Paris) helps you from your
car. Once inside the dramatic two-story lobby, your eye falls on a brushed
steel sculpture and a chair cleverly made of Kennedy silver half dollars.
Then you spy a blonde in diva sunglasses and Manolo Blahniks...is that
what’s her name? Could be.
Receptions take place in the Beverly Ballroom, located up the spiral
staircase on the second floor. But the party often begins in the
ballroom’s foyer, which feels like a cocktail lounge, albeit a
sophisticated one with beautiful original art on the walls. The décor is
sexy—lots of black lacquer and sofas clad in velvet and mohair. Guests
sink into couches set against a wall of windows, and sample the hors
d’oeuvre creations of celebrity chef Kerry Simon, who rose to fame at the
Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. He runs the kitchen here, and his
quirky take on American comfort food is reason alone to choose this venue.
When it’s time for dining and dancing, everyone moves into the ballroom,
whose mood changes with the time of day. Rounded windows let in lots of
natural light, and as dusk settles, a mirrored wall and chandelier drops
tipped with tiny blue lights lend a disco feel to the dance floor. A DJ
and dance-club lights? Not at all inappropriate.
After the official celebration winds down, some of your guests head to the
Stone Rose Lounge, Rande Gerber’s nightclub on the first floor. You, on
the other hand, are ready to call it a night. Wedding packages come with a
complementary deluxe suite where the most remarked-upon feature—apart from
the deliciously soft bed—is the etched-glass panel between the bedroom and
bathroom that changes from opaque to transparent at the flip of a switch.
For novelty’s sake, you can enjoy a rainfall shower while watching TV on a
32-inch flat-panel. Not your traditional wedding night. But when were you
ever traditional?
